In February of 2017, my sons set up a "boys" trip to New York City for me, them, and their two sons.
We stayed in an AirBnB apartment in downtown Manhattan only a block from the Empire State Building and spent several days walking all over the city.
In 1980, on a cross-country road trip, we had had reservations to stay in New York City but, upon arrival in the middle of a garbage strike, we opted not to stay.
The streets surrounding our hotel were filled with trash and sofas and chairs with the stuffing coming out, and there was no room for our van in the parking structure.
As non-city dwellers, we were not comfortable... we cancelled our reservation and drove on north and then back across the country.
Although I still prefer not to be a big city dweller, I did see a lot of interesting sites in 2017 that changed my whole persepective of the city.
Our exposure to Brooklyn and Manhattan were limited to auto trips to and from JFK airport.
